Heading to the crag for the first time or looking for inspiration for your next climbing adventure? Check out this guide to the most popular climbing spots close to Denmark:
1. Kullen (Sweden) - Popular and Scenic
Kullen in Sweden offers stunning cliffside views over the water, making it a beloved and frequently visited climbing destination. The Carstens Rende sector is particularly busy on sunny weekends. Most routes at Kullen require your own gear, and the climbs tend to be relatively short. Be sure to pack all the necessary equipment before heading out.
2. Kjugekull (Sweden) – Ideal for Bouldering
If you're into bouldering, Kjugekull is the place to be. The boulder field is conveniently close to the parking lot, sparing you from a long haul with your crash pads and gear. Even though the drive to Kjugekull is a bit longer than to Kullen, you'll get your hands on rock faster once you arrive. The area features a compact zone with plenty of boulder problems, including many beginner-friendly ones. So if it's your first time bouldering outdoors, Kjugekull is definitely worth a visit.
3. Bohuslän (Sweden) – For the Experienced
For seasoned climbers, Bohuslän is a must-visit. The area is known for its numerous crack climbs and tougher grades compared to other locations. For example, a grade 6 route in Gothenburg is usually easier than a 6- in Bohuslän. Expect good challenges here. Most routes in Bohuslän require your own gear, so make sure to bring everything you need.
4. Bornholm – The New Hotspot
Though the Moseløkken quarry, with its nearly 100 routes, opened just over five years ago, it's already a fresh favorite in Danish climbing. There are around 600 bolted routes on the rock island, with many traditional routes along the coast. It's agreed that all quarry routes are bolted, while coastal routes remain on natural protection. Some routes stretch up to almost 50 meters, though most are shorter. The rock quality on Bornholm is a notch better than at Kullen, and the Danish Climbing Federation often holds annual gatherings here, usually in August.
5. Gothenburg (Sweden) – Perfect for Beginners
Gothenburg is a highly versatile climbing area. Like many other spots, the individual crags are spread over a larger area, with numerous sectors to choose from. Gothenburg offers many bolted routes, including easier ones, making it a great starting point for those new to rock climbing. There's also a good selection of traditional routes, providing challenges for experienced climbers. From Zealand, you can easily cross the Øresund Bridge, and from Jutland, there's a ferry directly to Gothenburg from Frederikshavn. The variety of grades and the short travel time from Denmark make Gothenburg a popular climbing destination.
