The auto belay is a controlled descent device and can be used for recreational climbing in gyms and on fixed or portable climbing walls.

Using this device eliminates the requirement for a belayer by providing hands free belay for a climber. However, on letting go of the wall the auto belay will not suspend the climber in midair, it will descend the climber to the ground at a controlled rate. The line when released will then automatically retract permitting multiple descents.
